How a Duel Fuel System Operates

Also called a hybrid heat dual fuel system, this system utilizes two types of fuel: gas and electricity. Essentially, it’s a hybrid between a natural gas furnace and a heat pump. The former uses the combustion of natural gas to distribute heat while the latter uses refrigeration to move heat from one location to another.

Furnaces are still very reliable heaters, and affordable since gas doesn’t tend to cost very much. They are also ideal for when weather gets below freezing. A heat pump is a two–in–one heating and cooling system that uses refrigerant to move heat into the home in the winter and transfer it out during the summer—like a regular AC system. This heat transfer is extremely efficient and enables the heat pump to heat, until the weather outside turns freezing.

At that point, you would need an alternative heat source. With a dual fuel system, when your heat pump is no longer able to efficiently heat your home, your hybrid system automatically switches over to the furnace to help you save money.
